The Elements & The 3/4 Rhythm of the Zodiac Signs
There are 3 qualities or modalities of the signs: cardinal, fixed and mutable. There are 4 elements of the signs: fire, earth, air and water. As each quality and element is placed in the aforementioned order around the zodiac, a unique combination emerges for each sign. The Qualities of the Signs The Elements of the Signs
How Rulership Was Assigned The Sun was given to the hottest sign, Leo. The Moon was given to the preceding seasonal ingress, Cancer. The planets were then placed around the wheel in both directions by proximity to the Sun. From the Sun forward through the signs.... From the Moon backwards through the signs... A Significance of Polarities Each sign has an opposite. This indicates a polarity to balance for each axis. The same planetary oppositions occur twice by ancient sign rulership. Mars - Venus Oppositions: Aries-Libra & Taurus-Scorpio Mercury - Jupiter Oppositions: Gemini-Sagittarius & Virgo-Pisces Luminary - Saturn Oppositions: Cancer-Capricorn & Leo-Aquarius A Look at the Elements Masculine/Yang/Active/Projective: Fire & Air Fire: puts us in touch with the will to be and to create. Impulsive, spontaneous, self-motivated energy that begins the 3 processes of development. Energy is enthusiastic, excitable, impatient, honest, freedom loving, inspirational Earth: puts us in touch with our physical senses and the material world. Patient, practical, self-disciplined energy that grounds each process of development in material reality. Energy is stabilizing, solidifying, judgmental, cautious, efficient, dependable Air: puts us in tough with our intellectual faculty and fields of information. Thought powered energy that shapes our material reality through our perceptions and ideas. Energy is intellectual, conceptual, perceptual, objective, detached, social, freedom-loving Water: puts us in touch with our emotions and subtle nuances beyond the physical realm. Feeling energy that synthesizes our life experiences into emotional patterned responses that help us to "tune in" to our souls deepest yearnings. Energy is emotional, sympathetic, empathetic, responsive, psychically sensitive, attuned to unconscious motivations, fluid, self-contained, protective, yielding yet all conquering A Look at the Qualities Cardinal: initiates things, dives right in and gets things started. This is evident in that the cardinal signs begin our seasons. However cardinal lacks the follow through to finish what it starts, which is why fixed follows cardinal. Fixed: follows through, it sticks to things long after other signs have given up. However this factor can get it stuck in a rut unable to change, which is why mutable follows fixed. Mutable: adapts, changes, and re-shapes things. Mutable energy is followed by cardinal, so it has a sense of a new beginning and begins to reshape what fixed as set in place to prepare for the next cycle.
